Hai Phong promotes cooperation with K-Water on smart water resource management
On the afternoon of June 22, Chairman of the Hai Phong People’s Committee, Do Thanh Trung hosted a meeting with a delegation from the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-Water) led by Han Seong Yong, Senior Vice President for Green Infrastructure.
The meeting focused on discussing and advancing strategic cooperation in water resource management and smart urban infrastructure development.
Also attending were Vice Chairman of the Hai Phong People’s Committee Tran Van Quan and representatives from various city departments and agencies.
Hai Phong’s growing need for smart water management
During the meeting, Chairman Do Thanh Trung welcomed the K-Water delegation and highlighted Hai Phong’s rapid development as one of Viet Nam’s largest industrial, service, and urban centers.
He emphasized that the city has been accelerating expansion of technical infrastructure systems, development of industrial parks and economic zones, construction of Viet Nam’s first Free Trade Zone model.
However, this rapid growth also created urgent challenges related to ensuring water security, optimizing industrial water supply and drainage systems, operating environmentally sustainable wastewater treatment infrastructure.
The Chairman noted that K-Water, as South Korea’s leading state-owned water resources enterprise possessed extensive experience and expertise in water management. He expressed confidence that cooperation with a company of K-Water’s international reputation could provide innovative solutions for the city.
Proposal for water resource assessment
Chairman Do Thanh Trung proposed that K-Water conducted a comprehensive survey and assessment of Hai Phong’s rivers and water resources. Based on the findings, both sides would jointly develop solutions to improve water quality and strengthen long-term water management.
On behalf of the city government, he reaffirmed Hai Phong’s commitment to providing necessary information and data, administrative support, favorable conditions for research and project implementation.
The Chairman also assigned local agencies to serve as focal points and coordinate closely with K-Water throughout the planning and implementation process emphasizing cooperation based on equality, mutual respect, and shared benefits.
He expressed confidence that the partnership would help transform Hai Phong into a smart and sustainable water-management city while contributing to the broader comprehensive strategic Partnership between Viet Nam and South Korea.
K-Water’s proposed solutions
During discussions, city officials and Vice Chairman Tran Van Quan exchanged views with the delegation regarding the current state of Hai Phong’s water resources and the challenges facing the city’s water systems.
Representatives of K-Water expressed admiration for Hai Phong’s dynamic growth and thanked city leaders for their warm reception.
K-Water proposed collaborating with local authorities to implement advanced technologies based on big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), digital twin simulation technology.
These technologies would be used to optimize water supply and drainage networks, reduce disaster-related risks, improve water quality and environmental management.
Next Steps
Both parties agreed to establish a dedicated working group responsible for information sharing, field surveys, development of implementation plans.
Following data analysis and on-site assessments, K-Water is expected to submit a Comprehensive Water Resources Management Master Plan for Hai Phong in September 2026.
