Ensuring fresh water supply for Cat Ba's peak tourist season
To meet growing demand for fresh water to support socio-economic development and residents' daily needs on Cat Ba Island, Cat Hai Special Zone is upgrading and repairing key reservoirs damaged by natural disasters.
With a designed capacity of around 298,000 cubic meters, the Tran Chau Reservoir serves as a strategic water reserve, helping ensure water security for the entire island, especially as climate change intensifies saltwater intrusion and reduces natural water sources.
After Typhoon Yagi in 2024, several parts of the reservoir were damaged, particularly embankment slopes, waterproofing systems and drainage infrastructure, preventing the reservoir from operating at full capacity.
In response, the Cat Hai Special Zone People’s Committee launched a repair and upgrade project for the Tran Chau Reservoir, with total investment of more than 6.3 billion dong. The project focuses mainly on reinforcing nearly 500 meters of embankment, stabilizing landslide areas, and upgrading drainage and waterproofing systems.
The project will restore the reservoir's storage capacity and serve as a key measure to ensure water security, support sustainable tourism development, and help build Cat Ba into a green, safe and climate-resilient tourism island.
