Highlights from multilingual teaching model in high school education
Marie Curie High School, at the moment, is the only private high school establishment in Hai Phong City to carry out a multiple-language teaching model. The four languages–English, Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin–have attracted the participation of many students and gained many encouraging achievements that helped determine the apt educative orientation of the school board. The positive results were made possible by the efforts to overcome challenges and the simultaneous application of methods and innovations by the school’s teachers and students.

A Japanese class for 12th-grade students in Marie Curie High School featured representatives from the Japanese Language School (J-Osaka International Academy). The Japanese guests got to exchange their own cultural and linguistic values, as well as offered insights on studying abroad in Japan to the students. The exchange is part of the high school’s regular activities dedicated to the students to improve and find more interest in learning the language.
Since 2011, besides English, Marie Curie High School has added Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean teaching as the students’ first foreign language. The four languages are simultaneously taught in all three grades, accounting for 120 students in three classes learning the Asian languages while the rest study the current English curriculum. The school board developed a contractual teaching staff for the languages to maintain the demand in the number of lessons, learning hours, and engagement to the schooling unit.
In the past few years, the school’s students have made numerous achievements at the National University Entrance Exams in the four foreign languages. Many of the school’s alumni were offered scholarships from Japanese and Chinese universities. The school also reached out for partnerships in education and participated in many competitions and international exchange programs for students to learn and grow. Marie Curie High School’s multilingual direction is considered a positive for the innovation and flexibility of education.
