Start construction of Haiphong International Gateway Port
On the morning of April

by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Cat Hai District, Haiphong City. According
to the master plan, Haiphong International Gateway Port will be built along the
existing channel in the South of Lach Huyen estuary, with the total berth
length of around 8,000m and the total route length of about 18km.
Haiphong International
Gateway Port will be developed with a modern and comprehensive infrastructure
and handling technology for receiving container ships of 4,000-6,000 TEU, and
up to 8,000 TEU in subsequent phases of the project.
The project which includes 2
components has total investment of about 1.2 billion USD, being
funded by Japanese’s ODA and state budget, and implemented
under PPP form.
Component A’s scope covers
the building of port infrastructure on the whole route, such as: shipping
passages, roadsteads, a 3,230-meter-long breakwater with the crest elevation of
+6.5 CD, a 7,600-meter-long sand control dyke with the crest elevation of +2.0
CD, internal road system, soft soil ground improvement, etc. Also, temporary
berths, roads in the administration area and the administration office building
are included. Component A is managed by Vietnam Maritime Administration with
total investment of nearly 9 billion USD.
In the future, Haiphong
International Gateway Port will become the core of the seaport and inland port
system, which will create a dynamic and effective logistic system and develop
to an international transit port in order to meet the increasing demand of
cargo shipping. Once completed, the port will direct exports from the North of
Vietnam to US and European markets and vice versa without transiting
through regional ports in Singapore or Hong Kong; hence, reduce
the shipping cost and increase the competitiveness of Vietnam goods.
Haiphong International Gateway Port Project is the first piloting
PPP project between the Governments of Vietnam and Japan.
Mr. Motonori Tsuno, Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam Office,
affirmed at the ground-breaking ceremony on April 14th morning that
this project is not only the result of the long-standing and effective
cooperation between Vietnam and Japan, but also a milestone of 40th
anniversary of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations.
