Waste Classification At Source - Small Acts With Big Benefits
In accordance with the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, household waste generated by individuals and households is categorized into three groups: waste that can be reused and recycled, food waste, and other household waste. Starting from December 31, 2024, all individuals and households are mandated to classify solid waste at source.

Waste classification at source has been a topic of interest for Hai Phong City for many years. In 2016, Hai Phong collaborated with Kyatishu City, Japan to implement the "Green Growth Strategic Action Program". During phase 1 of the program, Japanese experts imparted knowledge and technology on waste classification, collection, and recycling to Hai Phong City. After 8 years of implementation, significant progress has been made in the classification of waste in areas with high organic content such as markets, restaurants, hotels, and schools. Building on these achievements, phase 2 of the program, starting July 2024, aims to involve the entire population in waste classification, with collection workers ensuring the proper separation of waste types.
As stipulated in Law on Environmental Protection 2020, households failing to comply with waste classification regulations and proper packaging of household solid waste will face fines ranging from 500,000 VND to 1,000,000 VND after December 31, 2024. Urgent action is required, necessitating the concerted effort of the entire political system. At a recent meeting on August 8th, the Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee urged departments, agencies, and local authorities to implement solutions including public awareness campaigns, inspections, supervision, and the selection of qualified service providers. The synchronized implementation of waste classification is crucial to its success.
For many developed countries, waste is considered a valuable resource. People around the world are utilizing waste as raw material for energy production, reducing the need for landfill space. Classifying waste at source may seem like a small action, but it has a significant impact on reducing landfill waste, conserving resources, generating organic materials for fertilizer production, and capturing gas for electricity. It also serves as an effective strategy for establishing a green and sustainable economy./.
