Preserving Traditional Craft Villages
Vinh Bao district is known as one of the localities with the largest number of traditional crafts in Hai Phong City, including Bao Ha carpenter village, puppetry village, mat weaving, and embroidery villages of Dong Minh commune. To preserve and promote traditional craft villages, Hai Phong City’s Cooperative Alliance has just organized two training classes to supplement artisans with knowledge and help expand markets for local crafters.

Bao Ha village is famous for statue carving and wood carving. This craft has given workers high income. Initially, from leftover pieces of wood, with talented hands and rich imagination, artisans carved and created beautiful puppets. From then on, puppetry was born, and local traditional production also shifted.
Embroidery is also one of the traditional occupations of women in Dong Minh commune. Here, there were times when women just sat at the embroidery frame whenever their hands were dry. Embroidery not only helps women earn extra income besides farming but also helps them nurture their patience and creativity.
The two recent vocational training classes organized by the Cooperative Alliance in Dong Minh commune of Vinh Bao district specialized in clay puppetry and embroidery. These are only two among many local traditional crafts that are gradually withering due to the impact of market mechanisms. The classes are held for nearly a month and will end at the end of November./.
