Export of agricultural products: advantages and obstacles
Vietnamese agricultural products are increasingly confirming their brands in the international market. The export value of vegetables and fruits in the past six months only reached about 3 billion USD, nearly equal to 2022. With current growth momentum, 2023’s fruit and vegetable export turnover could reach 5 billion USD. However, a glance at the ten largest import markets of Vietnam might show that the country’s products still have many challenges to face.

From being a little-known product, Vietnamese durian has become the biggest agricultural product in the Australian market with its brand. In Australia, 1kg of frozen durians costs 18.99 AUD, equivalent to about 330,000 VND. Prices of whole and jack-removed fruits range from 20-25 USD per kg (about 350,000-430,000 VND), a reasonable price for Vietnam's export durians.

“The successful export of Vietnamese fruits to the Australian market is a good thing because, for businesses, it is considered a measure of quality so that businesses can export to other markets around the world.” Ms. Anna Le – Director of GreenPath Australia Company.

Data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in the first five months of the year, Vietnam's durian export turnover reached 503.4 million USD, surpassing dragon fruit and becoming the export item with the most value. Of which, durian exports to China alone reached $477 million, accounting for 95% of the country's total export turnover of this commodity group.

Meanwhile, Thailand recently announced to raise its standards of durian exports to China. Thailand has also shortened the time for shipping to China by more than four days, instead of 8-10 days as before.

To confront more competitors, Thailand Port focuses on quality instead of just competing on quantity and price. While the quality and safety of Vietnam’s agricultural products, in general, have been continuously improved over the years, some of Vietnam’s products are not competitive in price. For example, the quality and taste of oranges, pomelo, or Vietnamese lychee are highly commended by European consumers. But Vietnam's goods cost more than similar products in this market. Currently, Vietnam's fruit exports are still mainly to the Chinese market. Experts recommend, besides the Chinese market, Vietnam needs to boost fruit exports to the European market with many opportunities to expand thanks to advantages from the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
