In the first 5 months of 2015, Cat Bi airport served 2,986 flights, increasing 15.02% as compared to the same period of 2014.

Also within May, a total of 402.9 thousand passenger arrivals was estimated, making an increase of 25.47% over the same period of 2014. Besides, the volume of in-and-out cargoes reached 2,473 tons, up 13.54% against the same period of 2014. These new signals affirm the potential and attraction of Cat Bi’s aviation transport in spite of its ongoing expansion project.

Currently, the project to expand the flight zone of Cat Bi International Airport has been promptly executed as scheduled. Flight calibration is slated to be completed by October 2015 for the airport’s full operation. The new runway of 3,050 meters long and 45 meters wide enables B777, B747, B767, A321 and equivalent planes to take off and land safely; taxiways, holding yards, parking yards equipped 8 parking places for A321 and auxiliary constructions provide accommodation for all kinds of E-class planes used by worldwide airlines.

Once completed and put into use in mid 2016, Cat Bi International Airport could serve 4 million passengers per year, meeting the capacity of 1,000 passengers in rush hours.

In tandem with strong investment in upgrading facilities, recently, airlines have taken surveys and promoted the opening of air routes from Cat Bi Airport to domestic and foreign airports. Amongst them, VietJet Air commits to opening domestic routes from Hai Phong to Da Nang, Nha trang, Da Lat and planning to set up 4 international routes from Hai Phong to Guangzhou, Kunming, Tianjin (China). At the same time, VieJet Air also increases the frequency of Ho Chi Minh - Hai Phong to 5 routes per week.
