Hai Phong is a
coastal city in a distance of 102 kilometers to the Northeast of Hanoi
capital, borders with Quang Ninh province to the North, Hai Duong
province to the West, Thai Binh province to the South, and Bac Bo Bay in
the East Sea and Hainan Island to the East. The city is located in the
“two corridors and one belt” of economic cooperation between Vietnam and
China, and has a significant position in the socio-economic
development, national defense and security of the North and the whole
country.

Far North of the city is Lai Xuan commune of Thuy Nguyen district; far West is Hiep Hoa commune of Vinh Bao district; far South is Vinh Phong commune of Vinh Bao district; and far East is Bach Long Vi island.
Hai Phong is a sea transport hub in the North with deep seaport advantage; a development motivation of the Northern key economic region, a general economic, science and technology center of the Northern delta area; and one of the two development centers of the Northern key economic region. Hai Phong possesses various large-scale industrial zones, as well as trade, service, tourism, education, medical and aquaculture centers of the Northern delta area. Hai Phong is a growth pole of the Northern key economic triangle, including Hanoi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh, out of Hanoi capital regional plan. Hai Phong is also a front locality of the North where located headquarters of the 3rd Military Region and Vietnam Navy High Command.
Hai Phong, known as the Red Flamboyant City, is the biggest port and industrial city in the North of Vietnam, located in the Northern delta area. Hai Phong is the third largest city of Vietnam after Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi capital. Hai Phong is one of the five cities under direct control of the Central Government, the first-rank central city at national level together with Da Nang and Can Tho. As of December 2011, Hai Phong population is 1,907,705 people, of which 46.1% live in urban area while 53.9% in rural area, that makes Hai Phong the 3rd crowded city in Vietnam.
