Lach Huyen port strengthens Hai Phong's maritime gateway role
Nearly a decade after entering operation, the Lach Huyen deep-water port has become one of Hai Phong's key growth drivers. Beyond significantly expanding cargo-handling capacity, the deep-water terminals have enabled direct shipping links between Vietnam and major global markets, reinforcing Hai Phong's position on the international maritime map.
Of the Hai Phong port system's more than 115 million tons of cargo and over 8.2 million TEUs handled in 2025, Lach Huyen accounted for about 16.6% of total cargo volume and nearly 29% of container throughput. In the first six months of 2026, the port complex handled more than 12.08 million tons of cargo, equivalent to over 1.37 million TEUs, with 1,190 vessel calls.

The most significant advantage of the Lach Huyen port is its ability to accommodate large container vessels and operate direct shipping services to Europe and the United States. This provides a key foundation for Hai Phong to strengthen its role as northern Vietnam's leading import-export gateway and a national logistics hub.

Under Vietnam's seaport development plan for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Lach Huyen will continue to serve as northern Viet Nam's international gateway port, with additional modern terminals scheduled for construction.
