Cargo throughput at Hai Phong Port maintains strong growth
Cargo throughput at ports in the Hai Phong area has maintained strong growth momentum this year, marked by several important milestones. Notably, Hai Phong Port has handled the 2 million TEU containers for the first time, while the total cargo throughput in the first 10 months of the year increased by more than 11% year-on-year. The figures reflect the vibrancy and positive development of the city’s seaport system.

Commenced in February of this year, by mid-December, the cargo throughput at Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal had reached over 710,000 TEUs and the full- year total cargo throughput is estimated at approximately 785,000 TEUs. This is an impressive figure for a seaport that has only been in operation for less than a year. The increase in cargo volume in the Lach Huyen deep-water port area has significantly contributed to the overall growth in cargo throughput in the Hai Phong port area.
In the first 11 months of this year, cargo throughput in the Hai Phong port area reached over 104 million tons, up approximately 8% compared to the same period last year. In the Lach Huyen area alone, by the beginning of December, the cargo throughput reached approximately 1.8 million TEUs, an increase of about 45% period-on-period and is striving to reach 2.3 million TEUs for the whole year; thereby making a positive contribution to the logistics supply chain.
By 2025, Hai Phong aims to achieve a total cargo throughput of 112 million tons and approximately 17,000 vessels. To date, the positive growth in cargo throughput at Hai Phong ports are partly attributed to the city's efforts to boost economic growth, along with the sustained production and investment activities of businesses. In addition, proactive upgrades to port infrastructure, improved inter-regional connectivity and the consolidation of Hai Phong's role as a crucial import-export gateway for the Northern Key Economic Zone are also considered the key factors. Furthermore, the ports have actively promoted digital transformation and technological application, and standardized processes to enhance operational efficiency and attract new service routes. This impressive growth in cargo throughput is expected to be the driving force for Hai Phong port system to achieve even higher milestones in the coming years, while maintaining their role as a maritime hub.
