Under Construction Ministry Decision No. 756 issued in 2025 approving the detailed development plan for Hai Phong's port land and water areas for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Lach Huyen is designated as the city's international gateway port, serving as the main hub for large container vessels and long-haul shipping routes.
Container berths No. 1 through No. 6 have already been completed and put into operation, forming a concentrated deep-water container terminal complex. Berths No. 7, 8, 9 and 10 have received in principle investment approval from the prime minister and are now under construction.

Maintaining sufficient channel depth is essential to ensure the efficient operation of the deep-water terminals and enable large container ships to enter and leave safely.

Under the master plan, the Lach Huyen port area is expected to have between 14 and 16 berths by 2030, comprising 15 to 18 wharves with a combined length of 5,625 to 6,875 meters, excluding other port facilities. The port is designed to handle between 61.4 million and 90 million tons of cargo annually.
The continued expansion of Lach Huyen is strengthening Hai Phong's competitiveness in attracting investment while supporting industrial, logistics and maritime service development. The completion of additional berths is also expected to help drive further growth in cargo throughput across Hai Phong's port system in the coming years.
