Strengthening natural disaster forecast and prevention capacity

On Friday, the task force of the General Bureau for Natural Disasters led by Mr. Trần Quang Hoài – Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, Director General of Vietnam Disaster Management Authority conducted a factual inspection at several vulnerable irrigational works in the areas of Vinh Bao district and worked with the People’s Committee of Haiphong city on measures to enhance the management quality of dykes, embankments, natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue in 2022; the disbursement for upgrading the dyke and embankment system under the public investment plan, period 2021-2025.

At present, Haiphong city has 24 dykes with the total length of 417km, of which, 335.5km of dykes are stable and ensure safety (making up more than 80%); 72km of reinforced dykes (accounting more than 17%) and 9.5km of vulnerable dykes (over 2%). Besides, there are 388 under-dyke culverts, of which, 213 ensure safety (representing for nearly 55%), 113 need reinforcing (more than 29%) and 62 vulnerable culverts (nearly 16%).

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Trần Quang Hoài - Director General of Vietnam Disaster Management Authority, acknowledged results obtained in the dyke and embankment management, natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue of Haiphong in the recent period. In the coming time, VND 1,870 billion of central capital source will be poured in Haiphong to repair and upgrade several vulnerable dykes and irrigational works, however, Haiphong needs to invest commensurate sources to increae the funding to better meet the demand for natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue.

For investment projects to construct and repair and upgrade dykes, embankments and irrigational system using the central capital, Haiphong city will create all the favorable conditions for the fulfillment of dossiers  and procedures as well as site clearance to deploy the plan as scheduled./.
