The
Canadian Embassy in Vietnam on December 8 announced over CAD94,000
(approximately US$82,000) in funding for three non-governmental organisations
to facilitate their projects in Vietnam’s localities in 2014 -2015.
The money is being channeled through
the Embassy’s Canada Fund for Local Initiatives.
The recipients include the Center
for Development and Integration (CDI); Center for Creative Initiatives in
Health and Population (CCIHP), and ICS Centre, a Ho Chi Minh City-based
non-profit organisation on protecting and promoting rights of the lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in Vietnam.
The CDI received an aid package of
over CAD33,200 for its project on providing legal support for vulnerable people
and victims of human trafficking in Trung Khanh border district in the northern
mountainous province of Cao Bang.
The project, which is expected to
benefit around 1,600 people in three communes of Trung Khanh district, is
designed to increase protection and support to the lives of vulnerable people
and victims of human trafficking.
In the same effort to cope with
human trafficking, a CCIHP-launched project on ending the problem in Vietnam’s
northern provinces will be granted more than CAD30,400. The project is being
implemented to ensure that the victims from the localities will be supported
and the human traffickers will be prosecuted.
The Ho Chi Minh City-based ICS
Centre will be provided with roughly CAD 30,600 to boost support for the LBGT
community in 15 cities and provinces in Vietnam.
According to Canadian Ambassador to
Vietnam David Devine, Canada is pleased to support these projects that will
make direct contributions to fighting against human trafficking and improving
rights of LGBT community in Vietnam.
